Champions Pullin’ for Children a success

by BYRON C. WESSELL
on 11 Oct 2018

Calvin Brown Jr. first started pulling with his father in 1987 and began pulling on his own in 2000. He now has been competing in the sport of truck and tractor pulling for the past 18 years.

Currently he pulls the Buckeye Bowtie a super stock 4x4 gas truck with Power Pulling Productions. However, he recently turned his hobby and love of pulling into a much bigger passion. Brown Jr. was one of the driving forces of creating the Champions Pullin for Children series event in the Lucas Oil Pro Pulling League.
“Believe it or not. It’s my out on weekends. I love the competition and the people I compete with. We’re like a big family,” Brown Jr. said on what he likes best about pulling.
For the second year in a row now, Brown has helped organize the Pullin for Children event at Pine Lake Raceway & Trails. The proceeds raised goes directly to Shriners Hospitals for Children of Erie, Pa. All the donated money will be provided to the sick children in the area regardless of the family’s ability to pay.
“I wanted to bring a motor sports event of this caliber to Ashtabula County and I wanted to be able to give to a local charity that would use the money and have the money be beneficial for. I picked Shriner’s Children’s Hospital and they have been great to work with. I know it will be useful for them,” Brown Jr. said.
Last year just under 600 fans were in attendance and this year the estimated amount through the gate was over 750. Last year the total amount of money raised was right around $2500, while this year the check to be given to Shriner’s Children’s Hospital is estimated to be around $8500-$9500.
Several of the competitors handed over their winning and said give it to the children.
This year’s Champions Pullin for Children event took place on Saturday, Sept. 22.
“It was great. We had wonderful weather. We packed the stands and had five classes. It was professionally ran by the Lucas Oil Champions Tour and Powering Pulling Productions,” Brown Jr. said.
“It was a beautiful night. All the pullers commented on how great the track was.  I got a lot of messages from pullers that they would definitely be back next year,” Brown Jr. added.
Brown Jr. hopes the event will continue to grow each year and get bigger and better. He plans on eventually having a two-day event and his ultimate goal is to have it televised on MAV TV (Motorsports Network).
Brown Jr. also admits he couldn’t have put together the event without his wife Rochelle Brown.
“I couldn’t do it without her. She really runs around everywhere and puts up the event flyers, pickups up the door prizes and anything else that needs to be done to make the event successful,” Brown Jr. said.
Track owner Bud Fisher also played an important role in the event by allowing it to be held at Pine Lake Raceway & Trails.
“Bud Fisher is out of this world with what he does for the community. He doesn’t charge me a dime. He uses all his own equipment to make a great power track look great and he is just a really great person for the community that would do anything to help out with this event,” Brown Jr. said.
One of the most popular competing classes was the ARP class with Lucas Oil Super Stock Diesel 4x4 trucks that are often featured on MAV TV. The Pulling for Children event had 16 of that class alone and nearly 70 hooks in general.
Some of the other classes were the limited Pro/Super Farm Tractors, the Super Stock 4x4 Trucks, Pro Stock Trucks, Pro Stock 4x4 Trucks and Open Street Diesel Trucks.
Brown Jr. would also like to thank the Community Care Committee of Andover Ohio a wonderful organization that helps the needed families in the area and for doing a great job on vending for the event.
I would like to thank all of our local and out of town sponsors along with everyone who came out and supported our event because of you the Champions Pullin for Children was once again successful in 2018. Special thanks also goes to D & E electric for sponsoring the plaques, Bortnick equipment for supplying the tractors, and Admar supply for providing the portable light plants.
