Today, following the swearing in of the 116th Congress, Democrats immediately moved to end the Trump Shutdown that is threatening $9 billion in economic output and currently hitting 800,000 Americans squarely in the wallet. Representative Troy Balderson voted to continue the government shutdown.
For nearly two weeks, TSA airport security officials, border patrol officers, FBI agents and a litany of other federal workers across our nation have been required to work without a paycheck while many have been furloughed. The withholding of pay from these workers is threatening the U.S. economy, and financial experts are predicting the continued shutdown “will knock $8.7 billion off gross domestic product.”
And tonight, Balderson voted to continue this attack on workers and the economy.
“Instead of working across the aisle to end this self-inflicted wound on our economy and hardworking Americans, Representative Balderson voted to continue the government shutdown indefinitely and to risk a $9 billion economic hit,” said DCCC Spokesman Evan Lukaske. “Balderson proved he is more worried about President Trump being angry than making sure our national security officials get paid for the work they do to keep us safe. Nearly one million hardworking Americans have to worry about whether they can make rent this month, put food on the table or afford prescription drugs because Washington Republicans like Balderson are playing political games with their lives.”
Background:
Economic analysts warned that “a potential shutdown [is] the biggest risk to the national economy in 2019” and that if the shutdown continues, it could take $8.7 billion out of the economy.
Since the Trump Shutdown began:
* Approximately 420,000 federal employees have worked without pay, while another 380,000 have been forced to stay home.
* Hundreds of thousands of federal contractors have been forced to stay home, and will lose wages that have a small chance of back pay.
* The Coast Guard has furloughed 6,000 employees and forced about 44,000 to work without pay.
* The FCC has suspended nearly all of its operations, impacting businesses and consumers.
* The Small Business Administration has stopped processing loans they’d previously guaranteed, forcing small businesses to rely on their own credit.
* The Department of Agriculture has been forced to withhold direct payments to some farmers hardest hit by President Trump’s trade war with China.
* Some home loans have stalled, threatening to damper home sales if the shutdown continues.
* SNAP benefits have been threatened for about 40 million Americans, including minors, the elderly and the disabled.
* Tens of thousands of researchers have been furloughed from agencies like NASA and the National Science Foundation, threatening grant payments and important scientific research.
